The Brief

RAW Impact was opening SALT school in rural Cambodia to promote children’s literacy, and needed some bright, fun images for their learning materials. The brief was to create three images that represented certain words that were part of their syllabus, as well as a large, A3 image that would take students through a fun ‘treasure-map’ styled hunt of the English language.

Process

As with all my illustration work, pencil sketches were sent to the client for approval before the final image was inked and painted with watercolours. As this was for a children’s syllabus, the imagery was kept brightly coloured, friendly and fun.

About this Client

SALT (Serving, Assisting, Leading, Teaching) School is an initiative by the people behind RAW Impact, a non-profit organisation that tries to initiate change through projects with lasting impact. They are behind several sustainable projects in Cambodia, a hands-on social enterprise. Founded in 2013 by Troy and Nicole Roberts, RAW Impact is registered with the Cambodian Government, in partnership with Global Development Group Australia.

Only 58.5% of children in Cambodia attend school. Teachers are paid close to nothing, the schools are extremely underfunded, and corruption is rife. SALT School was created to help fill this need by creating informal, outdoor schools that not only teach over 200+ kids but which also support its teachers with fair salaries.
